If the fee is a barrier for you, please contact us to request a fee waiver before applying for membership.
Can non-Indigenous people join as supporters?
Yes! Please visit our Membership page to see which membership class is right for you.
Can I apply as a student, or as an emerging professional without much experience?
Yes! Please visit our Membership page to see which membership class is right for you.
I don't live in Canada or the United States; can I become a member?
No; indivuals must reside in either Canada or the United States, and organizations must be headquartered in Canada or the United States. This an eligibility requirement determined by the IEA's bylaws and Membership Policy.
What if I live in a United States territory?
Please select "United States" when registering.
Yes! A number of committees work together on exciting IEA projects, and committees are open to IEA members. If you're not a member, register today! If you are, please get in touch for more information about volunteering.
Can you recommend one of your members, or refer me to an editor from a specific Nation or community?
We promote all of our talented members via our Indigenous Professionals Directory and our Jobs Board. Because our team's goal is to connect people regardless of who is in our personal networks, we focus on creating and sharing effective, transparent tools and approaches that make publishing more accessible for emerging Indigenous professionals.
Do you test your members' skills and qualifications?
Our Indigenous Professionals Directory provides space for our members to provide extensive information about their skills, qualifications, experience, and areas of interest in their profiles. Employers are expected to do their due diligence in order to ensure an applicant is qualified.
Do you ask your members for proof of Indigenous identity?
Our Indigenous Professionals Directory provides space for our members to provide extensive information about themselves and their community affiliation. Everyone using the services of the IEA (including the Indigenous Professionals Directory or the Jobs Board) is required to do their own due diligence to determine the eligibility of job applicants if Indigenous identity is a hiring requirement.
We do not collect personal identity documents such as status cards. This is because we do not have the required systems in place to safely collect or store personal identity documents. If we did, our very small staff does not have the qualifications or capacity to responsibly review them. Finally, due to various barriers, not all Indigenous applicants will be able to provide copies of such documents.
On our registration form, we ask applicants:
Please see our Indigenous Identity Protocol within our Membership Policy for more information on membership requirements.
Share a job posting with our Indigenous members via the Jobs Board, or visit the Indigenous Professionals Directory to browse Indigenous members' profiles.
We are in the process of developing a recommended rates guide, specifically tailored for our members. (Stay tuned by subscribing to our newsletter at the bottom of any IEA webpage.) In the meantime, please refer to Editors Canada's "What Editors Charge" and tools provided by the Editorial Freelancers Association (note that the EFA discusses rates in US dollars) for general industry standards regarding rates.
How can I stay informed on IEA activities?
Stay tuned via our newsletter! Sign up at the bottom of any page on our website.
Yes! Please contact us for more information.
What is the difference between the Jobs Newsletter and the Jobs Board?
Our new Jobs Board boasts several improvements over the popular Jobs Newsletter which it has now replaced.
How do I view postings on the Jobs Board?
The Jobs Board is a service we provide to our Indigenous members as a tool to promote equity in publishing and related fields. Indigenous IEA members can sign in anytime to view current postings on the Jobs Board. (Anyone can purchase a posting on the Jobs Board, and all IEA members can place a job posting for free-just sign in before filling out the purchase form.)
How do I create a profile on the Indigenous Professionals Directory?
This is a service we provide to our Indigenous members, who can sign in at any time to create, edit, or hide their profile. (Anyone can browse and search the Indigenous Professionals Directory.)
I'm joining partway through the year. Will I be charged the full membership fee?
Beginning in 2025, all members' accounts are renewed on January 15 of each year. Moving forward, you join on or after July 15, your membership fee will be discounted by 50%.
I don't want my credit card to be automatically charged. How do I turn off autorenewal?
Please contact us as soon as possible and ask us to turn off autorenewal for your account. You can also sign in at any time to change your payment method.
Creating a profile is completely optional. You can select "Create my profile later" and go on to complete and submit the rest of the form. Once your application is accepted, you can sign in anytime to create or update your profile. Please note that there is no option to save & return to the registration form itself, so if you want to save any information you have already entered there, you should print the page before navigating away.
I don't want my profile to be listed on the Indigenous Professionals Directory right now.
Creating a profile is completely optional. If you have already created a profile and would like it to be removed from public view, you can sign in at any time to "hide" your profile from public view. This is a good option if you are not accepting work at this time, or need time to update your profile, or simply don't want your profile to be publicly viewable right now. Your profile won't be deleted, but it will not be publicly visible until you choose to publish it again.
I don't have the accepted payment options.
We are currently working hard to add more online and offline payment options. In the meantime, please contact us to discuss possible solutions.

The lands we live on connect us to the stories of our past and those that will be told in the future-the stories upon which our profession is based. These lands sustain and nourish us, and our relationships with each other help us thrive. The Indigenous Editors Association gives thanks to the the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, and səlilwətaɬ Peoples who continue to steward the lands on which our head office is located, in Vancouver, BC. It is in this spirit of gratitude that we carry out our work as Indigenous members of the publishing community.
