The Indigenous Editors Association (IEA) is honoured to announce the return of the Indigenous Editors Circle, scheduled for spring 2025. After the passing of our founder, Gregory Younging, and the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Circle was placed on hiatus. Now, for the first time since 2017, we are excited to host this transformative event.
The Indigenous Editors Circle is an Indigenous-led, five-day educational program designed to bring meaningful change to the way Indigenous stories are published. It offers culturally informed professional development for publishing professionals, created by Indigenous storytelling experts. Rather than focusing on basic editing skills, the program centers on the distinctive cultural contexts of Indigenous stories, forming the foundation of the learning experience for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous participants.
The program follows the "braid" methodology developed at the 2015 Circle, fostering collaboration and dialogue through shared morning sessions and meals. In the afternoons, Indigenous participants will attend sessions specifically designed for their community, creating a space to address shared challenges and emerging concerns within the storytelling industry. Non-Indigenous participants will participate in tailored sessions designed to build their understanding of the obstacles faced by Indigenous professionals and equip them with tools to collaborate respectfully with Indigenous creatives.
Indigenous professionals from all sectors of the publishing community are encouraged to apply for the Indigenous Editors Stream at the 2025 Indigenous Editors Circle from May 4 to 9.
Applications for Indigenous attendees are due by Wednesday, January 15, 2025 at 4PM PT.
Non-Indigenous publishing organizations can apply to send one representative to attend the Editing Indigenous Manuscripts stream of the 2025 Indigenous Editors Circle from May 7 to 9.
Applications for Non-Indigenous attendees are due by Wednesday, January 22, 2025, at 4 PM PT.

The lands we live on connect us to the stories of our past and those that will be told in the future-the stories upon which our profession is based. These lands sustain and nourish us, and our relationships with each other help us thrive. The Indigenous Editors Association gives thanks to the the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, and səlilwətaɬ Peoples who continue to steward the lands on which our head office is located, in Vancouver, BC. It is in this spirit of gratitude that we carry out our work as Indigenous members of the publishing community.
