The Indigenous Editors Association (IEA) is honoured to announce the planning of the Indigenous Editors Circle, set to take place in spring 2025. Following the passing of our founder, Gregory Younging, and the disruptions caused by the COVID-19 pandemic, the Circle was placed on hiatus. We are now thrilled to host our first Circle since 2017. The event will offer culturally informed professional development for writers and editors. The program will be developed by Indigenous storytelling professionals, focusing not on basic editing skills but on the distinctive cultural contexts of Indigenous stories. These contexts will form the foundation of the learning experiences for both Indigenous and non-Indigenous participants.
Since our founding at the end of the 2017 Circle, the IEA has been privileged to receive steadfast support from the Canadian publishing industry as we work to advance Indigenous storytelling and ensure the culturally respectful publication of Indigenous stories. Even prior to our establishment, publishers collaborated closely with Gregory Younging to transform the publication of Indigenous stories. Today, we are extending an invitation to support members of the Indigenous storytelling community by providing full and partial scholarships for Indigenous storytelling professionals to attend the 2025 Circle.
Indigenous Circle participants will engage in a five-day program, while non-Indigenous professionals will participate for 2.5 days. Throughout the week, both groups will come together for joint morning sessions and meals, while Indigenous editors will also benefit from Indigenous-only afternoon sessions. These sessions offer Indigenous professionals the chance to come together and work through common issues and address emerging concerns that arise in working in the storytelling industry. The sessions for non-Indigenous participants will inform them about the challenges faced by Indigenous professionals and how they can work with Indigenous creatives in a good way.

The lands we live on connect us to the stories of our past and those that will be told in the future-the stories upon which our profession is based. These lands sustain and nourish us, and our relationships with each other help us thrive. The Indigenous Editors Association gives thanks to the the xʷməθkʷəy̓əm, Sḵwx̱wú7mesh, and səlilwətaɬ Peoples who continue to steward the lands on which our head office is located, in Vancouver, BC. It is in this spirit of gratitude that we carry out our work as Indigenous members of the publishing community.
